Saint-Avit is a municipality and a town with 199 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the western French department of Charente in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .

location

The place Saint-Avit is located in the cultural landscape of the Angoumois at an altitude of about 110 m above sea level. d. M. and is about 52 km (driving distance) in a south-westerly direction from the city of Angoulême and approx. 67 km in a south-east direction from the city of Cognac . The river Trude forms the western boundary of the municipality.

The population decline in the first half of the 20th century is mainly due to the loss of jobs as a result of the phylloxera crisis and the increasing mechanization of agriculture .

economy

While the residents of the village lived for centuries on the yields of their fields and gardens, viticulture was promoted in the late Middle Ages and early modern times , which - after the phylloxera crisis in the late 19th and early 20th centuries - is still the most important source of income for the Community. Tourism in the form of renting holiday homes ( gîtes ) also plays a not insignificant role in the economic survival of the community.

history

In 1882 the remains of the foundation walls of a Roman or Gallo-Roman estate ( villa rustica ) were discovered in a farmer's field .

In the Middle Ages, Saint-Avit - like the neighboring town of Bazac - belonged to the manor ( seigneurie ) of the Château de Bellevue .

Attractions

  • The origins of the parish church of Saint-Avit go back to the 11th century. The apse shows a pilaster structure . The tower has a defensive character; its patterned roof probably dates from the 19th century and is based on Flemish and Burgundian traditions. The church bell dates from 1624 and is recognized as a monument historique .

  • The Château de Bellevue is located near the border with the municipality of Bazac, which is adjacent to the south. It is a representative palace from the 17th century, which is now used as a hotel.
