In the first half of the 19th century the community always had between 600 and 700 inhabitants; As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants then fell continuously to the lows of recent decades.

economy

For centuries, the inhabitants of the community lived from agriculture; the soils of the municipality belong to the Bons Bois of the Cognac wine-growing region , but sales of expensive brandies have tended to decline in recent decades, so that viticulture no longer plays an important role. Income from tourism, in particular the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ), has played a not insignificant role for the income of the municipal treasury since the 1960s.

history

Church Saint-Fiacre
South side of the priory church with rebuilt apse

The Romanesque church suggests the existence of the place as early as the High Middle Ages. The Grammontese order founded a priory in the area of the hamlet of Rauzet in the 12th century . In the early modern period there were several iron smelters in the area of today's municipality, in which u. a. cast iron stove tops were made.

Attractions

  • The unadorned parish church of Saint-Fiacre dates from the 12th century; a side aisle was added later on the north side. The facade, originally designed according to a triumphal arch scheme, was cut at the sides during this time; only the simple archivolt portal remained intact. The crossing tower looks extremely compact; the apse is completely unadorned. The interior of the church room looks very rustic.
