The population decline in the late 19th and first half of the 20th century is mainly due to the loss of jobs as a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the overall increasing mechanization of agriculture .

economy

While the residents of the village lived for centuries as self-sufficiency from the yields of their fields and gardens, viticulture was promoted in the late Middle Ages and early modern times, although - after the phylloxera crisis in the late 19th and early 20th centuries - it was not again its earlier Reached importance. From the 16th to the 18th century iron was smelted in the wooded region, which was cast into cannons and other, mostly military, equipment in Ruelle-sur-Touvre , at the gates of Angoulême. Today milk production is the municipality's most important economic factor; Tourism also plays a not insignificant role in the form of holiday homes ( gîtes ).

history

In the Middle Ages the place was disputed between the Counts of Périgord and the Bishops of Angoulême ; two castles ( Château de Feuillade and Château de Belleville ) protected the place. In the absence of records, nothing is known about the events during the Hundred Years War (1337–1453) or the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598). Although the municipality was largely in the territory of the historic province of Périgord in 1790 , it was added to the Charente department.

Church Saint-Pierre
Église Saint-Pierre , inside
  • Remains of a previous building from the 11th century are still preserved in the north wall of the nave . The current parish church of Saint-Pierre was built in the first half of the 12th century; the building shows only the beginnings of what a few decades later should make the charm of the Charentes church building (see e.g. the church of Échillais ): two-story facade structure with triumphal arch scheme and archivolt portal on the ground floor. However, a three-part bell gable ( clocher mur ) is integrated into the west facade . The flat, windowless apse could indicate that parts of the church remained unfinished or that it had to endure war damage. The church building with a trapezoidal wooden ceiling has been recognized as a monument historique since 1907 . It was restored in 2009/10; Inside, some frescoes from five centuries, hidden under various layers of plaster and paint, were uncovered.
  • The Château de Belleville , built in the 16th century and once owned by the bishops of Angoulême, stands on the outskirts. The privately owned building complex consists of several round towers and a residential wing ( corps de logis ).
outside
  • The Château de la Mothe , also privately owned and surrounded by forest, was built in the 15th century, but was rebuilt and expanded in the 19th century. The building complex also includes a pigeon house ( pigeonnier ).
  • Nearby are the buildings of the ironworks of La Mothe , which operated well into the 19th century and which was also listed as a historical monument.
