The population decline in the first half of the 20th century is mainly due to the loss of jobs as a result of the phylloxera crisis and the increasing mechanization of agriculture .
economy
While the residents of the village lived for centuries on the yields of their fields and gardens, viticulture was promoted in the late Middle Ages and early modern times , which - after the phylloxera crisis in the late 19th and early 20th centuries - is still the most important source of income for the Community. Tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ) also plays a not insignificant role in the economic life of the municipality.
history
In the Middle Ages Bazac belonged to the lordship ( seigneurie ) of the Château de Bellevue in the neighboring village of Saint-Avit .
Attractions
- The origins of the parish church of Saint-Martin go back to the 12th century. The entire building, with the exception of the facade, was later slightly changed and plastered, which has so far prevented recognition as a monument historique . The ground floor of the facade shows the triumphal arch scheme often found in the Charente with a central arched archivolt portal and two side blind portals ; the middle level is formed by a row of blind arcades on double columns . The gable triangle is unadorned.
- To the side of the church is a covered well house ( puits ) from the 18th century.
