In the 19th century the population fluctuated between 800 and 900 people. Due to the proximity to the city of Angoulême and comparatively low real estate prices, the population of the municipality increased to over 3,000 in the 20th century.

economy

In the late Middle Ages and in the early modern period, some water mills (also for paper production) were operated on the river . Even today there is a company for the production of cardboard boxes. Otherwise retail, craft, viticulture and smaller service companies determine the economic activity of the place.

history

A Bronze Age and Iron Age settlement was discovered on the territory of the municipality in 2000 . A Gallo-Roman statuette from the 2nd century was also found. The Romanesque church indicates a place that already existed in the Middle Ages.

  • The Notre-Dame church is a Romanesque building from the 11th and 12th centuries, clad with precisely hewn natural stone , with a squat looking and unadorned crossing tower . The view from the east with the apse, which is lined by a stone base zone and therefore almost monumental, is worth seeing . The west facade shows a simple triumphal arch scheme on the ground floor with a central portal and two side blind portals , as is often found in old church buildings in southwest France. All archivolts are designed almost unadorned; only the capitals show a vegetal ornamentation. There is a narrow window above the portal arch; A partially figurative console frieze runs below the gable triangle . The side walls of the single nave nave were built in the 12th and 13th centuries. Century raised and reinforced with buttresses in order to be able to draw in two domes inside , which probably replaced an older vault; The unadorned triangular gable apparently also came into being in this context. The church has been recognized as a monument historique since 1912 .
  • Immediately next to the church is the inconspicuous but also from the Middle Ages building of the ancienne doyenné , which was intended as a reception and storage room for the annual payments in kind from the farmers ( tithe ). Inside there is a vaulted hall with a fountain.
  • The Château de Fléac is a 19th century building built in historicizing styles; it is owned by the municipality and is rented out on special occasions.
  • The Logis de Chalonne dates back to the 15th century. It is located - largely hidden from view - in a small wood and is privately owned.
  • In the municipality there is a roofed washhouse ( lavoir ) from the 19th century, in which the basin is uncomfortably embedded in the floor.
