In the 19th century, the population rose from around 600 in 1800 to over 1800 in 1900. Due to the proximity to the city of Angoulême and comparatively low real estate prices, the population of the municipality has grown to over 3000 inhabitants.

Economy and Transport

The place and its surroundings were dominated by agriculture for centuries. In the early modern period, two paper mills were built on the banks of the Touvre , one of which went into mechanical production in 1828.

A bus connection between STGA and Angoulême is offered.

history

First mentioned in 852 under the name Magnacum , names such as Magnac , Magny and Magnat can be found in medieval documents . The Romanesque church suggests the existence of a not insignificant medieval settlement.

Attractions

Église Saint-Cybard
Logis de Maumont
  • The Romanesque parish church of Saint-Cybard , built from precisely hewn limestone , dates from the 12th century and impresses from afar with its richly structured crossing tower , the middle floor of which is surrounded by blind arcades , while the significantly higher bell floor opens wide with double arcades with set columns. The multi-tiered, but otherwise completely unadorned, west portal is laterally accompanied by two mighty buttresses that stabilize the building. The extremely short nave , the two arms of the transept and the flat apse almost reproduce the plan of a Greek cross and are barrel vaulted ; the crossing , however, is covered by an on Pendentifs dormant dome . The church building was recognized as a monument historique as early as 1907 .
  • On the river bank there is a roofed washing area ( lavoir ) from the 19th century.
  • The Logis de Maumont, which is surrounded by a beautiful park , originally dates from the 16th century and stands near an old paper mill on the banks of the Touvre. It is privately owned and has been restored several times.
  • The Logis de Bussac dates back to the 15th century and is also privately owned.
