In the 19th century the population of the community increased from about 300 to over 500; Even the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture could not slow down the further increase in population in the 20th century, which is largely due to the proximity to the greater Angoulême area and the comparatively low property prices.
economy
For centuries, the inhabitants of the community lived from agriculture; In the early modern period, several water-powered grain , oil and paper mills were added. The soils of the commune belong to the fins bois of the Cognac wine-growing region , but hardly any wine is grown in the densely populated region around Angoulême.
history
Paleolithic tools have been found on the territory of the parish. The traditional existence of two Romanesque churches is sufficient evidence for a medieval settlement of the two parishes, which were united in 1293.
Attractions
- The Romanesque parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste is a single-nave and stocky-looking building, to which a neo-Romanesque west tower was added in the 19th century . This mighty tower in the style of the architects Paul Abadie and Edouard Warins is today's landmark of the place: The portico on the ground floor is open on all sides; the upper floor has three windows accompanied by set columns; The highlight is the mighty cone-shaped pointed helmet with imitations of shingles , accompanied by four smaller lanterns in the corners , which, depending on the angle of view, seems to float above the bell storey, which is wide open on all sides by columns.
- The two mills ( Moulin de Bourisson ) and ( Moulin à huile ) have been classified as Monuments historiques since 1991 .
- There are several washhouses ( lavoirs ) from the 19th century in the water-rich municipal area .
- The market hall ( hall ) built on a slope and open on two sides is also used for community festivals.
