In the second half of the 19th century the community had more than 500 inhabitants at times; As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants subsequently fell continuously to the lows of the last few decades.

economy

For centuries, the inhabitants of the community lived from agriculture; the soils of the municipality belong to the Bons Bois of the Cognac wine-growing region , but sales of expensive brandies have tended to decline in recent decades, so that viticulture no longer plays an important role. Income from tourism, in particular the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ), has become increasingly important for the income of the municipal treasury since the 1960s.

history

The Romanesque church and castle of Blanzaguet indicate a place that already existed in the Middle Ages; The formerly independent parish of Saint-Cybard also has a Romanesque church. In 1790, Saint-Cybard and the hamlet of Le Peyrat merged; in 1862 the merger with Blanzaguet took place.

Attractions

Blanzaguet - Saint-Pierre church with laterally shifted apse
  • The Romanesque parish church of Saint-Pierre von Blanzaguet dates from the 12th century. By half-columns templates articulated and round arches apse and with arcades provided Vierungsturm are their most prominent components; the west facade with a poorly decorated archivolt portal is rather inconspicuous. The corners of the structure are reinforced with stepped buttresses , whereas the outer walls are only reinforced against the vaulting by simple buttresses . The church, solidly built from precisely assembled house stones, has a single nave and is vaulted with a pointed barrel. The outer wall is loosened up by large blind arcades. The apse shifted off the axis to the right suggests an early change in the building plan. The building has been recognized as a monument historique since 1920 .
Château de Blanzaguet
  • The castle ( château ) of Blanzaguet, only about 100 meters away from the church, is a rather simple two-storey building from the 16th century, which incorporates a - possibly older - round tower. It belonged to the widely ramified Galard family , who originally came from the Condom area in Gascony . During the Revolution , the castle was sold as a national property ( Bien national ), but was repurchased by the municipality in 1867 to house the town hall ( mairie ), a school and the rectory ( presbytère ). At the rear of the castle there is a pretty park through which the Voultron brook flows.
  • The St. The church of Saint-Cybard, consecrated to Cybard of Angoulême , is a very simple Romanesque building with no crossing tower and apse. The portal zone of the west facade is designed according to a triumphal arch scheme; the west tower, divided by two horizontal cornices, rises above it . The apse-free nave is spanned by a wooden flat ceiling.
