As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants fell continuously from the second half of the 19th century to the lows in the 1960s and 1970s. Due to the proximity to the city of Angoulême and the significantly lower property prices in the countryside, the population of the municipality has increased again slightly in recent years.

economy

For centuries, the inhabitants of the community lived on agriculture as self-sufficient ; But the production of paper also played a not unimportant role from the end of the Middle Ages until the 19th century. The soils of the municipality belong to the Fins Bois of the Cognac wine region , but "normal" wines are also produced.

history

The place was on the Chemin Boisné , an ancient Roman road that connected Saintes (Mediolanum Santonum) and Périgueux (Vesunna) . In 1845 the neighboring communities of Plassac and Rouffiac merged to form one community.

Plassac - Saint-Cybard Church
  • The Romanesque parish church of Saint-Cybard in the district of Plassac is one of the architectural gems of the medieval architecture of the Charente ; it is dedicated to the hermit Cybard of Angoulême , who settled near Angoulême in the 6th century. The semicircular apse , which is structured by semi- columns with resting arcades , closes with a console frieze and is covered with stone shingles (lauzes) . The crossing tower , which is square in the lower part and later octagonal , closes with a conical stone helmet with imitation shingles . The outer walls of the nave and the southwest corner of the facade were built in the 15th and 16th centuries. Century statically secured by mighty buttresses . The lower part of the west façade shows the triumphal arch scheme so typical for church buildings in the Charente, with side blind portals ; above it runs a five-arched blind arcade row with inserted columns. A three-part arch position with a small central window and a console frieze above it leads from the facade to the unstructured and unadorned gable area . The single-aisle, pointed barrel-vaulted interior offers - in addition to precisely crafted masonry work - an extremely rich capital decoration and a crypt-like chapel under the eastern part of the church. The apse itself is extremely richly designed with a nine-arched arcade position with in front and set columns and a console frieze running above it and reliefed metope fields ; In the apse dome there is an unusual oculus window . The building has been recognized as a monument historique since 1862 . Behind the altar of the lower church is an approx. 80 cm high statue of Our Lady from the early 17th century, which was placed under special protection in 1911.
  • The church of Rouffiac is a small chapel-like building from the 12th century with an entrance on the south side and a bell gable above the simple west facade.
