The continuous increase in population is mainly due to the proximity to the city of Angoulême and the comparatively low property prices in the countryside.

economy

The place and its surroundings were dominated by agriculture for centuries; Most of the people lived on a self-sufficient basis , surpluses could be exchanged or sold in the markets of Angoulême. In the late Middle Ages and early modern times, viticulture was promoted, but - after the phylloxera crisis in the late 19th and early 20th centuries - it never reached the old level again. In the early modern period, several paper mills sprang up on the banks of the Charente , one of which still produces high-quality paper that is used by the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris to restore old books.

history

As early as the 9th century, the Counts of Angoulême owned property in Nersac. There are no sources for the High Middle Ages, the Hundred Years War (1337–1453) and the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598). The Romanesque church suggests the existence of a not insignificant medieval settlement. The place experienced a heyday with the settlement of several paper mills since the 17th century, some of which produced into the 20th century.

  • The Romanesque parish church of Saint-Pierre , built from precisely hewn limestone , dates from the 12th century; however, it was partially Gothicized in the 13th century. The west facade has a multi-tiered round arch portal with set columns, but without any decoration of the archivolt arches and the tympanum field . Above the portal there is a slender ogival arch, i. H. gothic window. The facade is laterally framed by buttresses that are graduated both in height and in depth with profiled accompanying services . A console frieze runs underneath the transverse and completely decor-free rectangular gable, which gives the church building a defensive appearance . The church building was recognized as a monument historique as early as 1925 .
  • The town hall ( mairie ) is located right next to the church in the Château de la Foucaudie . This castle was originally built in the 16th century - to have still the only rough-hewn stone- built round towers on the back and the bretèche ( bretèches ) on the side towers on the front side; the current facade, however, mainly dates from the 18th (middle section) and 19th century (stairs).
outside
  • The Château de Fleurac is located about halfway between Nersac and the neighboring municipality of Saint-Michel ( 45 ° 38 ′ 26 ″  N , 0 ° 5 ′ 8 ″  E ). It is a building from the 16th century with profound changes after it was destroyed during the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598); The overall picture without a roof or tower is remarkable, its moat ( douve ) and crenellated crown still reminiscent of the medieval castle architecture. Overall, it is similar to the Château de Chesnel, which was built around the same time in the municipality of Cherves-Richemont , whose builder came from the same family. The castle was recognized as a monument historique in 1988 .
  • The Moulin de Fleurac is located in the immediate vicinity of the castle on the banks of the Charente. It was originally a grain and oil mill from the 16th century, but was almost completely rebuilt in the late 19th century. The mill was converted into a paper mill in 1978, but a few years later it became the property of the municipality and was recognized as a Monument Historique in 1988 . Today there is a museum on the history of papermaking here.
  • The Moulin Papart was originally a felt manufacturing company . At the turn of the 20th century it was converted into a paper mill. It has also been on the inventory list of the Monuments historiques since 1991 .
