economy

The place and its surroundings were dominated by agriculture for centuries. In the early modern period, several paper mills were built on the banks of the Touvre . The most important local employer, however, is a foundry ( fonderie ) founded by the Marquis Marc-René de Montalembert in 1753 , which specialized in the manufacture of ship cannons.

history

In a document from the year 1080 the place and the church belonging to a Cluniac priory were called Saint-Médard de Rodella ; in 1296 one finds Roella . The place experienced a heyday with the settlement of several paper mills since the 17th century, some of which produced into the 20th century.

  • The simple parish church of Saint-Médard dates from the 13th century; it belonged to a priory of the Abbey of Cluny , which however was already dissolved in the late Middle Ages. While the nave still shows quarry stone masonry , the facade , which was renewed in the 16th century, has massive bracing in the corners and is equipped with a basket arch portal , made of precisely hewn limestone ; the same applies to the slender bell tower on the south side.
  • The Renaissance fountain ( Fontaine François I ), which stands on a stepped base and has a dome, is a reminder of a visit by the king to the town. It has long been closed, but was recognized as a Monument historique in 1925 .
  • The Logis de Fissac from the 17th century is located about one kilometer west of the city in the district of the same name. It is a two-storey building with an attic with porthole windows. The garden and courtyard sides are separated from each other by a wall. The building was recognized as a Monument historique in 1969 .
  • The Logis de Villement stands on the banks of the Touvre and is also worth seeing.
