Despite the phylloxera crisis in viticulture, the increasing mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms, which at times led to a lack of jobs, the population of the community has increased noticeably since the 1920s.
economy
For centuries, the inhabitants of the community lived on agriculture as self-sufficient ; but also a number of mills - u. a. also for the production of paper and leather - settled in the water-rich region. There were also several limestone quarries in the area , the products of which were exported across the Charente by barges; In the 1930s, several mushroom growers settled in the rock caves . As early as the 19th century there was a wire drawing shop and a forge , from which a company for the production of iron emerged; Here, Pierre-Émile Martin and the German engineer Carl Wilhelm Siemens developed a simplified process for steel production ( Siemens-Martin process ). After the end of steel production, a large tannery established itself, which ceased operations in 1981; Today there is a small hydroelectric power station in the buildings . The soils of the municipality are in the Fins Bois of the Cognac wine-growing region , but sales of expensive brandies have tended to decline in recent decades, so that nowadays viticulture in the immediate vicinity of Angoulême no longer plays a significant role.
history
There was a Gallo-Roman temple (fanum) near Sireuil . Gregory of Tours mentions one of St. The oratorio Siroialensis , consecrated to Martin of Tours , in which many miracles occurred. In the 12th century the place came into the possession of the Abbey of La Couronne , which built a priory here.
