The Arrondissement of Angoulême is an administrative unit of the department of Charente in the French region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The prefecture is Angoulême .
Originally 245 of the 404 municipalities of the Charente department belonged to the arrondissement, so that on January 1, 2008 an administrative reform came into force, which was supposed to compensate for the inequality in the areas and the population of the arrondissements. It transferred the communes of the then canton of Rouillac to the arrondissement of Cognac and the communes of the then cantons of Aigre , Mansle , Ruffec and Villefagnan to the arrondissement of Confolens.

Reorganization of the arrondissements in 2017
As a result of the reorganization of the arrondissements in 2017, the arrondissement Angoulême became the area of the 15 municipalities of Ambérac , Anais , Aussac-Vadalle , Coulonges , La Chapelle , Maine-de-Boixe , Montignac-Charente , Nanclars , Saint-Amant-de-Boixe , Tourriers , Vars , Vervant , Villejoubert , Vouharte and Xambes the Arrondissement Confolens and the area of the 14 communes of Bécheresse , Champagne-Vigny , Champmillon , Côteaux du Blanzacais , Douzat , Échallat , Étriac , Hiersac , Moulidars , Pérignac , Saint-Amant-de -Nouère , Saint-Genis-d'Hiersac , Saint-Léger and Val des Vignes assigned to the Arrondissement of Cognac .
Instead, the area of the two municipalities of Châtignac and Saint-Laurent-des-Combes changed from the Arrondissement of Cognac and the area of the municipality of Saint-Adjutory to the Arrondissement Angoulême from the Arrondissement Confolens .
