In the first half of the 19th century, the population of the community was always around 250, only to drop continuously to the lows of the last decades of the 20th century as a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture . Only at the beginning of the 3rd millennium did the population stabilize again.
economy
The inhabitants of Juillaguet lived for centuries on the principle of self-sufficiency from agriculture; the soils of the municipality belong to the Bons Bois of the Cognac wine-growing region , but sales of expensive brandies and even wine have tended to decline in recent decades, so that viticulture no longer plays an important role. Income from tourism, especially the rental of holiday homes ( gîtes ), has been an important source of income since the 1960s.
history
An ancient Roman road ( Chemin Boisné ) Saintes ( Mediolanum Santonum ) to Périgueux ( Vesunna ) led through the territory of the municipality. The Romanesque church indicates a place that already existed in the Middle Ages.
The municipality of Juillaguet merged with Charmant and Chavenat on January 1, 2016 to form the Commune nouvelle Boisné-La Tude.
Attractions
- The single-nave Romanesque parish church ( Église Saint-Hilaire ) dates back in part to the 12th century, but it was later changed several times - u. a. two side chapels were added. The simple bell gable also seems to be a later addition.
- The two-storey Château de Juillaguet (often also referred to as Logis ) is - hidden behind bushes and trees - in the center of the village and is privately owned.
