In the first half of the 19th century the community had between 600 and 820 inhabitants; As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants then fell continuously to the lows in the 1970s.

economy

For centuries, the inhabitants of the community lived on agriculture as self-sufficient; The soils of the municipality belong to the Bons Bois of the Cognac wine-growing region , but sales of expensive brandies as well as wine have tended to decline in recent decades, so that viticulture no longer plays an important role in the region. Income from tourism, especially the rental of holiday homes ( gîtes ), has been added as a source of income since the 1960s.

history

The place was on an old Roman road ( Chemin Boisné ) that connected Saintes ( Mediolanum Santonum ) and Périgueux ( Vesunna ). In the 11th and 12th centuries there was a Commandery of the Knights Templar here , which became a priory after its defeat (1312) .

The Charmant municipality merged with Chavenat and Juillaguet on January 1, 2016 to form the Commune nouvelle Boisné-La Tude.

Notre-Dame church
Transept and apses
  • The nave of the Romanesque parish church ( Église Notre-Dame ) with its small, high-rise windows is still attributed to the late 11th century when the building was the chapel of a Templar commandery; the apse, richly structured by arcades and decorated with console figures, as well as the transept with its side apses are clearly the work of the 12th century, i.e. high Romanesque. The square crossing tower and its octagonal pointed helmet were repaired and partially renewed after severe storm damage in 1843. The otherwise rather simply designed portal of the church presents an unusual, with a column Fries and a diamond bar designed archivolt ; in Portalgewände and in the left-most of them blind arcade are Templar crosses carved. The single, spanned by an open roof nave ends in a chancel arch of the, crossing over passes and the transept whose three apses along a triumphal arch scheme to train. The lower part of the central apse is divided by seven blind arcades, three of which are windowed; In the dome there are remains of baroque frescoes. The lateral apses are not structured inside and outside and each have only one small east window. Church construction has been recognized as a monument historique since 1846 .
  • Immediately next to the church is the so-called Château de Charmant - the former Templar Commandery or the main building of the former priory with a remarkable Renaissance facade and rectangular windows with crosses dates from the 16th century in its current form. The portal, which is flanked by two pillars, is elevated by a balcony-like attachment with heraldic shields and a transverse oval oculus . The privately owned building complex was recognized as a Monument historique in 1925 .
