The population decline in the late 19th and first half of the 20th century is mainly due to the loss of jobs as a result of the phylloxera crisis and the increasing mechanization of agriculture . Due to the proximity to the city of Angoulême and the significantly lower property prices in the country, the number of residents has increased again since the 1960s.
economy
While the residents of the village lived for centuries as self-sufficiency from the yields of their fields and gardens, viticulture was promoted in the late Middle Ages and in the early modern period , but - after the phylloxera crisis in the late 19th and early 20th centuries - the old volume level never achieved has reached again. Tourism also plays a not insignificant role for the economic life of the municipality in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ).
history
In ancient times, the so-called Chemin des Anglais , a Roman road from Saintes ( Mediolanum Santonum ) to Angoulême ( Ecolisma ), which has only been archaeologically incompletely investigated, led through the municipality.
In the 15th century Jean de Valois , the grandfather of Francis I, ceded the town of Hiersac to the Abbey of La Couronne . In the course of the French Revolution , all the manors were dissolved.
Attractions
- The parish church of Saint-Thomas was built in the 12th century and is made of well-hewn stones. The corner pillars of the facade were added about 300 years later to stabilize the structure; possibly the west tower received its defensive appearance on this occasion. The nave with the vault is plastered and covered with joint paintings ; the apse has the usual dome vault , but is otherwise completely unadorned and not structured. The rural church building has two entrances, which could indicate a former priory church , and has been recognized as a monument historique since 1941 .
- In the village there is still a public weighing machine ( poids publics ) and a weighing house from the 19th century.
