economy

While grain and oilseeds ( sunflowers ) were mainly grown for their own needs, one could earn good money with the wine (later also brandy) export to England, Scotland and other countries in Northern Europe, although the winegrowers with the smaller part of the Had to make do with earnings. Today the south bank of the Charente near Gensac-la-Pallue is part of the Grande Champagne location within the large growing area for Cognac wines. Wine and cognac tourism also plays a not unimportant role in the economic life of the municipality.

history

La Grande Borne stone

A stone ( La Grande Borne ) about 1.15 in height, discovered in 1801 near an old crossroads, possibly dates from Roman times , on which it was believed that remnants of an unknown writing could be seen; Others see the sparse remains of a Roman milestone in the rather stele-shaped stone , which, however, usually had a round cross-section. Be that as it may, the stone disappeared in the mid-19th century.

In the Middle Ages - perhaps as early as Gallo-Roman times - the place was settled, as the Saint-Martin church, built in the 12th century, shows. A medieval castle also already existed; However, this was set on fire in 1548 during a popular uprising against the salt tax ( gabelle ). A new castle was built, in which the seminary of Saintes was housed since 1715 ; it was sold as a national good ( bien national ) and demolished during the French Revolution . Construction began at the end of the 19th century.

Logis de l'Éclopart
  • In the first half of the 17th century, the Logis de l'Éclopart was built about 2.5 kilometers west of the town center - a two-storey country house with slightly protruding corner projections , which has been classified as a monument historique since 1986 . The walls of the building consist of different stone materials: precisely hewn stones were used for the corner stones, the door and window frames as well as for some surfaces, while the actual building is made of only roughly hewn stone material, which was then plastered. The building is privately owned and cannot be viewed.
  • The imposing building of the Château de Garde Moulin (also Gademoulin ) was not rebuilt until 1875 in the neo-renaissance style; it is also classified as a monument historique . The entire property is in private hands and cannot be viewed.
