economy

Agriculture and especially viticulture have always played an important role in the Charente villages. While cereals, vegetables and oilseeds ( sunflowers ) were mainly grown for their own needs, one could earn good money with the export of wine (later also brandy) to England, Scotland and other countries in Northern Europe, although the winegrowers with the less Part of the earnings had to be satisfied. Today the south bank of the Charente near Châteaubernard is part of the Grande Champagne location within the large growing area for cognac wines. With the construction of the air force base Cognac-Châteaubernard (BA 709) and the designation of an industrial zone ( zone industriel ) and two commercial areas ( zones commerciales ), the economic power of the municipality has shifted there in the last few decades.

history

Prehistoric (see Dolmen de la Combe des Dames ) and Roman traces have been discovered on the territory of what is now the municipality. In the Middle Ages - perhaps as early as Gallo-Roman times - the area was rather sparsely populated, as the Commandery of the Knights Templar built in the 12th century prove; however, nothing is known of a church building. During the French Revolution , the place was called - to erase any memory of the hated feudal era - Bernard de Champagne .

Attractions

Châteaubernard - Dolmen Pierre Levée
  • The dolmen , known as Pierre Levée , is believed to date from around 3,500 BC. Be attributable to BC. It consists of only two supporting stones ( orthostats ) and a capstone; the right bearing stone seems to have overturned, causing the cover plate to tilt. It is not known whether the Neolithic building belonging to the megalithic culture was once larger.
  • Today's parish church was formerly the tower and apseless sacred space of a 12th century Templar commandery ; only a two-arched bell gable elevates the otherwise completely decor-free west facade. Similar to the neighboring town of Salles-d'Angles , the Romanesque building dates from the middle of the 12th century and was opened after King Philip IV 's destruction of the Knights Templar by three papal bulls from Clement V from 1307 to 1312 transferred to the Order of St. John ; It has been used as a parish church since the 16th century at the latest and received a sacristy extension made of smaller and only roughly hewn stones.
