After the Second World War there were only about 500 inhabitants.
economy
Agriculture and especially viticulture have always played an important role in the Charente villages. While cereals, vegetables and oilseeds ( sunflowers ) were mainly grown for their own needs, one could earn good money with the export of wine (later also brandy) to England, Scotland and other countries in Northern Europe, although the winegrowers with the less Part of the earnings had to be satisfied. Today the south bank of the Charente near Salles-d'Angles is part of the Grande Champagne location within the large Cognac wine-growing area.
history
Protohistoric round trenches are in the districts of Penchant de Lorimont and l'Houme , and angular ones in Les Chirons . Roman villas are believed to be in the hamlets of Les Puits d'Angeac and la Chabanne , and a medieval house in Les Branges . Remains of a house, which was estimated to be in the first half of the 9th century, were found in 1904, but the exact location was forgotten again. This could be the “Andiacum” farm, which Ludwig the Pious in 796 (at that time still King of Aquitaine) described as one of his winter residences, but which he will only be in every fourth year so as not to overload their economic power. Charlemagne himself stayed here a quarter of a century earlier, in July 769. Andiacum is also mentioned in a poem by Ermoldus Nigellus .
In the Middle Ages Angeac was a settlement of the Knights Templar , later it belonged to the Marquisat d'Archiac , which often changed the owning family. In 1793, the municipality of Angeac, which at that time still belonged to the canton of Salles, was created from several hamlets. In 1801 Angeac took the addition of Champagne to distinguish it from the nearby Angeac-Charente and was added to the canton of Segonzac.
Attractions
- The origins of the parish church of Saint-Vivien go back to the 11th century, but the current building mainly dates from the 12th (tower and nave), 16th (buttresses and conversion to a fortified church) and 19th (windows and vaults) . The single nave nave with its narrow windows is vaulted with a pointed barrel and has a flat end of the choir with a tracery window . The building has been included in the list of historical monuments since 1986 .
- The Logis d'Angeac country estate partly dates back to the 16th century. However, it was repaired or rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries. It has also been recognized as a Monument historique since 1986.
- The Manoir de Lorimont dates from the 19th century. It is privately owned and has been registered as a Monument historique since 1986.
- A predecessor of the Roissac Castle ( Château de Roissac in French ) probably dates back to Gallo-Roman times. The existence of a medieval castle in Roissac is documented. Today's Roissac Castle with its towering mansard roof dates from the 18th century. It was rebuilt around 1830 and has been recognized as a Monument historique since 1989. The building is privately owned.
- The fountain in Roissac with its stone water basins arranged in a row served both as a washing area ( French lavoir ) and as a cattle trough ( French abreuvoir ). It was built around 1850 and has been registered as a Monument historique since 1986.
