In the 19th century the population fluctuated constantly between 900 and 1200 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture , the population has been declining since then.
economy
Brossac lived from agriculture for centuries; the soils of the municipality belong to the Bons Bois of the Cognac wine-growing region , but sales of expensive brandies have tended to decline in recent decades, so that wine-growing only plays a marginal role. Income from tourism, especially the rental of holiday flats ( gîtes ), has played a not insignificant role in the income of the municipal treasury since the 1960s.
history
There is evidence of a Gallo-Roman country estate ( villa rustica ) in the municipality . The Romanesque - early Gothic church indicates a place that already existed in the Middle Ages.
Attractions
- About a kilometer east of the village are the sparse, but already mentioned in 1278 wall remains of an ancient country estate and a small aqueduct . They have been recognized as Monument historique since 1875 and 1889 .
- The parish church of Notre-Dame is a building from the 12th to 15th centuries and has both Romanesque and Gothic features. The corners of the west facade and the high walls of the nave are reinforced by buttresses . Several steps lead up to a slightly pointed portal, which is elevated by a large early Gothic, unmistakable pointed arch window . The gable top, on the other hand, seems to be a work of the Renaissance . The single nave nave of the church is spanned by a bricked pointed barrel vault with belt arch girders . The crossing is spanned with a groin vault; The semicircle of the apse features high arcades . The church has a late Gothic octagonal baptismal font and has been classified as a monument historique since 1985 .
