In the 19th century the population fluctuated constantly between 400 and 620 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture , the population has been declining since then.

economy

The inhabitants of Chillac lived from agriculture for centuries; the soils of the municipality belong to the Bons Bois of the Cognac wine-growing region , but sales of expensive brandies have tended to decline in recent decades, so that wine-growing only plays a marginal role. Income from tourism, especially the rental of holiday flats ( gîtes ), has played a not insignificant role in the income of the municipal treasury since the 1960s.

history

The Romanesque church indicates a place that already existed in the Middle Ages.

Attractions

Church Saint-Sulpice
  • The Romanesque parish church of Saint-Sulpice was built in the 12th century. The architectural structure of the west facade corresponds to the Charentesian type: the portal zone is designed according to a triumphal arch scheme with two side glare portals; Above a console frieze formed from stone heads is a five-part row of blind arcades with slender double columns; A simple bell gable is embedded in the unadorned gable field . The outer walls of the nave are loosened up by high blind arches and reinforced by buttresses that protrude only slightly . During renovation work at the end of the 15th century, the outer walls were slightly raised by a battlement ; inside the church was given a vault and the eastern parts were completely renewed. The church building has been recognized as a monument historique since 1961 .
  • Immediately next to the church is the castle ( Château de Chillac ), a complex of two buildings from the second half of the 15th century. Both buildings have different, mostly windowless towers with different roof shapes . The building complex is privately owned and has been classified as a Monument historique since 1961 .
  • The Manoir de la Vaure country estate from the 17th and 19th centuries is also privately owned and is recognized as worthy of protection.
