Vervant ( Occitan : identical) a place and is community with 146 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in western France Charente in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The municipality owns several hamlets ( hamlets ) and farmsteads .

The place Vervant is at an altitude of about 90 m above sea level. d. M. in the former forest area of the Boixe in the old cultural landscape of the Angoumois , part of the Charente . The city of Angoulême is about 70 km (driving distance) southeast; the city of Saintes is about 36 km southwest.

The continuous decline in the population in the late 19th and first half of the 20th century is mainly due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture .
economy
The place and its surroundings were dominated by agriculture for centuries; most people lived on a self-sufficient basis . In the late Middle Ages and early modern times, viticulture was promoted, but - after the phylloxera crisis in the late 19th and early 20th centuries - it never reached the old level again. For this, the play Forestry and a limestone quarry an important economic role. Tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ) has been a source of income since the 1960s.

People settled in the area as early as the Neolithic Age .
In 1020 the then Count of Angoulême gave the place into the care of the Abbey of Saint-Amant-de-Boixe , whereupon they founded a priory here . There are no sources for the High Middle Ages, the Hundred Years War (1337–1453) and the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598).
Attractions
- The origins of the former priory church and today's parish church of Saint-Pierre date back to the 12th century. In the 19th century, however, the west side of the church collapsed and tore parts of the nave with it, whereupon these were rebuilt in simple neo-Romanesque - neo-Gothic forms. The significantly higher eastern section of the church was retained.
