Esse is a French municipality with 498 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the north of the department of Charente in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Confolens and the canton of Charente-Vienne .
geography
Esse is four kilometers northeast of Confolens on the Vienne River and not far from the Issoire River .
Numerous traffic routes run through the municipality, including the D 952 (former N 151bis), the old road from Angoulême to Nevers, on the right bank of the Vienne. The road D 30, from Confolens to Lesterps, crosses the south of the municipality. Several regional roads run through the village, providing connections to neighboring towns such as Saint-Germain-de-Confolens, Brillac, Lesterps and Saint-Maurice-des-Lions. The D 951 Deviant – Confolens connects the Central European Atlantic Road from Angoulême to Bellac and Guéret, bypasses the city from the west and north and runs 4 km from the city.
Numerous small hamlets ( Hameaux ) surround Esse, including (selection):
Grand-Neuville, Petit-Neuville, Cour, La Chaise, Périssac, Villemandie, Gorce, Longeville, La Boissonnie, La Pouyade, Château-Guyon, Bostgueffier and Saint- Maurice.
history
Archaeologists found a Stone Age dwelling in the place, later the Gauls and Romans conquered the place. In the Middle Ages Esse was a stop on the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostela . Easter processions have been taking place in Esse since 1660. Between the tenth and eighteenth centuries Esse was the seat of a bailiwick (= viguerie ). The place initially belonged to the Diocese of Limoges, later to the Diocese of Poitiers.
