Wilmer Alejandro Flores Garcia (born August 6, 1991 in Valencia , Carabobo ) is a Venezuelan baseball player in Major League Baseball . The shortstop , who occasionally also plays as a second baseman , was under contract with the New York Mets from his 16th birthday until the end of the 2018 season . He currently plays for the San Francisco Giants .

Career

Minor Leagues

Wilmer Flores signed his first contract with the New York Mets on his 16th birthday in 2007 and played in 2008 first in the Rookie League with the Kingsport Mets and then Short Season A with the Brooklyn Cyclones, as well as at Single-A level with the Savannah Sand gnats.

In 2009, Flores played the entire season with the Sand Gnats and scored 129 hits in 125 games and ended the season with a batting average of .264. He was also invited to the All-Star Futures Game 2009 , a friendly game played since 1999 with the most promising perspective players in the minor leagues .

After another half season with the Sand Gnats in Savannah , Flores was appointed to the St. Lucie Mets , the High-A farm team, in June 2010 . There he completed 67 games in 2010. In the 2011 season, Flores made 129 appearances for St. Lucie in the regular season and, thanks to strong performances, had a large share in the fact that the team was able to win their division for the first time since 2006. Also in the 2012 season, Flores was initially still active with the St. Lucie Mets. In the Florida State League's All-Star Game, Flores was voted Most Valuable Player after contributing one run and three RBI to the success of the South All-Stars. During the 2012 season, Flores was promoted to the Binghamton Mets at AA level. There he convinced in 66 games with a very good average of 31.1% and 33 RBI.

The 2013 season then started Flores with the Las Vegas 51s , with which he had reached the highest class of the MiLB . In the 51s, he played 107 games, scored 15 home runs and again improved his batting average to .321. At the beginning of August 2013, Wilmer Flores was appointed to the Mets Major League squad for the first time.

Major League

Flores made his debut on August 6, 2013 in a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies . He scored his first two hits, his first double and his first run a day later, also against the Rockies. In the sixth game on August 11th away with the Diamondbacks , he scored his first major league home run. He finished the season with 27 appearances and a batting average of .211. He had 20 hits, 13 RBI and scored eight runs.

Flores started the 2014 season again with the 51s, was called back to the MLB team at the beginning of April, but was then transferred back to the AAA team after only one assignment. On May 9, he returned to the Mets squad and came from there to the remainder of the season on a regular basis and completed 78 season games with an improved average of .251, 29 RBI and six home runs compared to the previous year.

In the 2015 season, Flores was on the opening day of the Mets for the first time, but showed poor performance at the beginning of the season. In April alone he made six errors and offensively he did not come close to his usual batting average. In May he improved and he achieved his first walkoff on May 26th, a single against the Phillies , followed by his first walkoff home run against the Nats on May 31st . Flores finished the regular season with 59 RBIs in 137 games with a batting average, 263 and 16 home runs scored. The Mets won their division and moved into the play-offs, so that Flores came to his post-season operations. In Game 2 of the 2015 National League Division Series against the Dodgers , he scored his first two hits and scored his first runs. In Game 4 of the 2015 National League Championship Series , he scored a triple against the Chicago Cubs . In the 2015 World Series , which the Mets lost 4-1 to the Kansas City Royals , he scored a run in both game 3 and game 4. Over the entire post season, Flores played 13 games, remained without RBI and had a rather low batting average of 19.5%.
