economy
The mainly agricultural town had several blast furnaces for the manufacture of cannons in the hamlet of La Forge in the 17th and 18th centuries; in 1760 more than 300 workers were employed there. In the 19th century there was a grain mill and an oil mill on the same site, powered by the current of the Tardoire. Today Rancogne lives mainly from agriculture and viticulture. The place still belongs to the area of the Bons Bois in the far east of the Cognac growing area . Since the 1970s, the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ) has been an important source of income for the place.
history
In the Bronze Age, some of the karst grottos were inhabited or were used as places of worship or burial, as can be proven by ceramic finds.
The place was inhabited in the Middle Ages; the residents built a small church on a hill - possibly the former place was also there. In the 16th century, today's castle was built on the site of a previous building.
Attractions
- The small Romanesque parish church of Saint-Pierre is located on a hill above the village. The west facade and the west tower date from the 19th century. The single-nave interior of the church is spanned by a vault, which, however, should not correspond to the original state. The retracted apse has a straight and windowless end and is separated from the nave by a choir arch .
- The Château de Rancogne is an imposing four-wing complex from the 16th century. The most striking component is a defense tower ( donjon ) on a square floor plan in the southwest corner; at the top, the tower closes with machicolations and a platform enclosed by a parapet wall with a small watchtower ( échauguette ). There is a pigeon house in the castle park . The whole complex is privately owned, so only a few photos are available.
- Parts of the La Forge building complex, which is also privately owned today, was recognized as a Monument historique in 1991 .
