The museum was founded in January 1995 by Dina Vierny (1919–2009). Vierny was the model and muse of the French sculptor Aristide Maillol (1861–1944) for ten years from the age of 15 until his death. In 1947 she opened a gallery on Rue Jacob with an exhibition dedicated to Maillol, followed by a Rodin exhibition .

In 1964 Vierny handed over to the French state monumental sculptures by Maillol, which the then Minister of Culture , André Malraux , had installed in the Jardin des Tuileries and which are currently in the Jardin du Carrousel. The Fondation Dina Vierny was founded around this time. Olivier and Bertrand Lorquin, Dina Vierny's sons, currently run the museum; Olivier as director and Bertrand as curator and deputy director.

The building

The three-wing building, formerly known as the Hôtel Bouchardon, dates from the 18th century and was built on the site that belonged to the Couvent des Récollets. Among other things, Alfred de Musset lived here between 1824 and 1840, and the painter Paul Baudry had his studio here. The La Fontaine des Quatre Saisons fountain by French sculptor Edmé Bouchardon adorns a facade of the building complex.

After fifteen years of renovation, the museum's exhibition area is now 4,250 m². In addition to the halls of the permanent exhibition, there are rooms for temporary exhibitions that take place three times a year. The museum has been closed for renovation work since February 2015; the reopening is planned for September 2016.

The collection

The museum exhibits drawings, etchings, paintings, tapestries and sculptures by Maillol such as La Méditerranée , Pomone and La Rivière . Vierny's collection also includes works by Henri Rousseau , Séraphine Louis , Henri Matisse , Edgar Degas , Pablo Picasso , Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres , Paul Cézanne , Suzanne Valadon , Raoul Dufy , Pierre Bonnard , Odilon Redon , Paul Gauguin , Auguste Rodin, Wassily Kandinsky , Marcel Duchamp , Raymond Duchamp-Villon and Jacques Villon are shown. There are also Russian artists such as Serge Poliakoff and Iwan Puni .

Maillol Banyuls Museum

Another museum near Banyuls-sur-Mer, Maillol's birthplace, was opened by Vierny in 1994, the Musée Maillol Banyuls. The detached farmhouse in the Vallée de la Roume had served Maillol as a home and studio, and Vierny worked there with the artist for ten years. Maillol's sculpture La Méditerranée from 1905 covers his grave in the garden of the house. You can visit his studio, his living environment and various works by the artist such as paintings, ceramics and bronzes. Temporary exhibitions are also held here.
