Paul Jacques Aimé Baudry (born November 7, 1828 in La Roche-sur-Yon ( Département Vendée ), † January 17, 1886 in Paris ) was a French painter .

biography

Equipped with a scholarship, Paul Baudry came to Paris around 1846 at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts , where he became a student of the painters Michel-Martin Drolling and Antoine Sartoris . In 1850 Baudry, supported by his teachers, took part in the exhibition of the Paris Salon and won the Prix ​​de Rome . In addition to a medal, the prize was combined with a generous travel grant, which enabled Baudry to undertake a study trip to Italy and spend almost four years in Rome to study and copy the ancient masters. One of his first works there is The Child and Happiness (1850) and is still entirely in the style of the Venetian masters.

At the turn of the year 1850/51, Baudry returned to France and settled as a freelance painter in Paris. For the next few years portrait painting was an important focus of his work. In addition, of course, other works such as B. The Punishment of a Vestal Virgin .

Baudry had kept the paintings in the style of Michelangelo ; to this end he traveled to Rome again in 1864 in order to be inspired. In addition to three large ceiling paintings ( Melody and Harmony , Tragedy and Comedy , Parnassus ), The Apotheosis of Homer adorned the narrow sides with ten compositions illustrating the effects of dance and music and the triumph of beauty. With his muses in particular, Baudry was more oriented towards Paolo Veronese and Francesco Primaticcio . With the depiction and glorification of the law , Baudry illustrated the great room of the Court of Cassation in Paris and was honored with a medal of honor on the occasion of the exhibition of the Parisian Salon in 1881 .

In 1883 Baudry played a key role in the design of Chantilly Castle . In the last few years of his life he lived quite withdrawn and only painted very little.

Paul Baudry died on January 17, 1886 in Paris at the age of 57.
