Until the middle of the 20th century, the population fluctuated between 250 and 350; Due to the proximity to the city of Angoulême and the significantly lower real estate prices, the population of the municipality has increased significantly in recent years.
economy
For centuries, the inhabitants of the community lived from agriculture; But also several mills, in which, in addition to grain and oilseeds, wood and material residues were also ground to make paper, played a not unimportant role from the end of the Middle Ages until the 19th century. The soils of the municipality belong to the Fins Bois of the Cognac wine-growing region , but sales of expensive brandies have tended to decline in recent decades and a large part of the municipality's area is now built on, so that viticulture no longer plays an important role today.
history
In the Middle Ages, the place was on a ferry that was widely used by traders and pilgrims and connected the northern bank of the Charente with the opposite bank.
Attractions
The Romanesque parish church of Notre-Dame is - despite the restoration carried out at the end of the 19th century by the architect Edouard Warin , a student of Paul Abadie - one of the architectural gems of the medieval architecture of the Charente . The apse and choir bay are divided on the outside by pilaster strips and blind arches. The multi-storey crossing tower , accompanied by a round stair tower, retains its square floor plan on the upper levels as well - until a stone, cone-shaped pointed helmet with imitations of shingles elevates the building; in the corners there are four pin-like attachments. The archivolt portal in the middle of the west facade is richly decorated with vegetable and figurative motifs. The zone above the portal, which is divided into five fields by profiled wall templates, shows a depiction of the Assumption of Mary made in 1893 by a Charentesian sculptor with two accompanying figures, of which the left is characterized by her 'hairy robe' as John the Baptist ; the beardless figure on the right is John the Evangelist . A figurative console frieze with a cornice decorated with tendrils closes the level at the top. The pediment , which is usually unadorned, shows Christ as a pantocrator with outstretched arms in a square mandorla and surrounded by the four evangelist symbols . The interior of the church presents perfectly crafted masonry with lateral blind arches and a slightly pointed barrel vault ; the nave and the clearly drawn-in choir area are separated from each other by a choir arch . The building has been recognized as a monument historique since 1886 .
- The Logis de Rochecorail is a 16th century building with later modifications.
