Paul Abadie

Paul Abadie the Younger (born November 9, 1812 in Paris , † August 3, 1884 in Chatou , Yvelines department ) was a French architect and preservationist . He is considered the main representative of French historicism . Paul Abadie gained fame primarily for his design for the Sacré-Cœur Basilica on Montmartre in Paris, the construction of which he began but was unable to complete. In addition, he carried out numerous restorations on church buildings in the south of France.

As the son of the architect of the same name , Abadie was a student at the École des beaux-arts in Paris from 1835 to 1838 under the architect Jules Leclerc and a student of the painter Jean Alaux . In 1840 in the Agence des Archives du Royaume and in 1842 in the Conseil des bâtiments civils , he became chief building inspector of the Hôtel de la chambre des députés (Chamber of Deputies) in 1845 , but resigned immediately to join the agency as the second inspector, which was headed by Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Lassus and Eugène Viollet-le-Duc had been entrusted with the restoration of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Since 1844 he has been working on behalf of the Commission for Historical Monuments ( commission des monuments historiques ) researching buildings in southwestern France. In 1849 he was appointed auditor of the commission des arts et édifices religieux (commission for church art and church building) as well as diocesan architect for Angoulême , Périgueux and Cahors . In 1874 he succeeded Viollet-le-Duc as diocesan architect for Paris , who had submitted his resignation, in 1881 that of Jean-Louis Labbé as diocesan architect for Bordeaux . In the following years he restored sacred buildings and other buildings owned by the church in Périgueux and Bordeaux in these properties.

Paul Abadie died on a train station platform in Chatou in 1884 at the age of 71 . He rests next to his wife Louise, née Mallard († 1860) in the Chatou cemetery.

One of his students was Edouard Warin (1837–1911), who imitated his style in the restoration of the church of Villebois-Lavalette .

  • 1856: Knight of the Legion of Honor (on the recommendation of the Minister of Finance and against the will of the ecclesiastical authorities, who accused Abadie of constantly exceeding the established budget and his uncontrolled expenditure)

  • 1871: Member of the Commission des monuments historiques (Commission for Historical Monuments)
