Jean Alaux
Jean Alaux (born January 15, 1786 in Bordeaux , † March 2, 1864 in Paris ) was a French painter . His long stay in Rome earned him the nickname le Romain ("the Roman").
Alaux was the son of a painter who also trained him; two of his brothers also worked as painters. Alaux made a name for himself early on with numerous, mostly historical oil and fresco paintings, which earned him a good job. In Rome he maintained close relations with Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres ; both portrayed each other. In 1827 he married Françoise-Virginie Liégeois and in 1830 had a daughter who died in 1843. In 1841 Alaux was appointed officer of the Legion of Honor . 1847-1851 he was director of the French Academy in Rome .
Many of his works now hang in the Palace of Versailles and the Louvre , others in Bordeaux, Dijon and in the National Museum at Pau Castle . Alaux's oil paintings cost up to $ 158,000.
