In the first half of the 19th century, the community usually had between 800 and 950 inhabitants; As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants then fell continuously to the lows of the 1920s to 1960s. Due to the proximity to Angoulême and the significantly lower property prices in the countryside, there has been a significant increase in the population over the past few decades.

economy

For centuries, the inhabitants of the community lived on the principles of self-sufficiency from agriculture; only the city of Angoulême came into question as a marketplace. From the 18th to the 20th century there were two weaving mills in the village. The soils of the municipality still belong to the Bons Bois of the Cognac wine-growing region , but sales of expensive brandies and even wine have tended to decline in recent decades, so that viticulture no longer plays a role.

history

Until the French Revolution , there were two parishes in the area of today's parish - Garat and Ladoux (also called Sainte Cathérine ). However, the hamlet of Ladoux was devastated during the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598).

Attractions

Église Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens
Interior of the church
  • The elongated Romanesque parish church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens dates from the end of the 12th century. The outer walls of the apse and the nave are completely unadorned and only structured by buttresses . The west facade, framed by buttresses, shows a slightly pointed, but unprofiled archivolt portal with brick pillars , which can also be found in the window above. The sound openings of the small structure - redesigned from a bell gable to a bell tower in the 19th century - are completely unadorned. As the half-column templates on the nave wall show, the entire building was originally vaulted, but during the Easter mass in 1629 the vault collapsed and probably also damaged large parts of the masonry; the hemispherical arch of the apse was later renewed. As a result, the walls were rebuilt and a flatter brick vault was drawn in, which, however, showed cracks in 1991 and was torn down; then the nave was given a modern, open roof structure . The inner reveals of the windows are all bevelled; two cornices encircle the entire church wall including the apse. The facade of the church was recognized as a monument historique as early as 1926 .
  • The privately owned Château de la Tranchade ( 45 ° 37 ′ 8 ″  N , 0 ° 14 ′ 26 ″  E ) originally dates from the 14th century - from this time only the donjon built on a square floor plan has survived ; thereafter the building was modernized repeatedly - most recently in the 20th century. The palace construction has been recognized as a monument historique since 1970 .
  • The Logis de l'Ermitage in the hamlet of Bragette dates largely from the 18th century, but was modernized in the 19th century in a neo-Gothic style.
