Attractions

The main attraction in the town center is the large Saint-Pierre church with its bell tower that can be seen from afar . It dates from the second half of the 15th century and was expanded and completed in the 16th century. The nave is still influenced by the Flamboyant style of the French late Gothic , which is particularly evident in the portal , while the winding columns and the octagonal dome and lantern of the church tower date from the Renaissance period.

Ruins of the Château of Fléac
The Château d'Ardennes

The remains of the noble residence built in the 15th century are located opposite the church behind a high wall. The castle once consisted of a two-story corps de logis with an outside staircase at the front and a rear wing, which ended with a pavilion twenty meters high and was accessible via a stair tower with a spiral staircase. Today only the vaulted ground floor of the pavilion, the facade of the Corps de Logis and the northern side of the surrounding wall, still flanked by a small tower, remain.

About 3 km east-southeast of the core settlement and about 500 m south of the D 249 road to Marignac is the Château d'Ardennes , a former moated castle whose moats are now dry, but are still spanned by a bridge in front of the gate. The castle, massive but architecturally rather modest, was for a long time the residence of Pierre Dugua de Mons , the founder of the first permanent settlement in New France ( Canada ). He was governor of Pons from 1610 to 1618 and then lived until his death in 1628 in his Château d'Ardennes, which he had bought in 1618 and where he was buried under a large tree in front of the castle entrance. A small castle was probably built by the Templars in the 12th century , enlarged by their new owners in the 15th century and converted into a castle. Dugua had the upper floors renewed and a large flight of stairs built. In the rooms there are still chimneys and wall coverings from the 17th century, some of them from the 18th century. The farm buildings and the courtyard-side covered galleries were restored in the late 20th century. The facility is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside.
