history

In 1826 the previously independent neighboring municipality of Montignac (approx. 150 inhabitants) merged with Bougneau.

  • The church of Bougneau dates in part from the 11th century and is therefore one of the oldest in the Saintonge; However, it was fundamentally redesigned in the 15th century, so that little of the old church remained. The west facade, divided into two horizontal sections, is completely unadorned; the jagged portal and the figure frame above it were added in the late Gothic period (15th century) - as were the two buttresses on the side. Only the console frieze under the gable triangle is from the original construction period. The former single-nave interior of the church was extended by a side aisle on the north side in the 15th century (?); both parts have wooden ceilings. The crossing received a rib vault . The two-storey apse design seems to belong to the 12th century - both storeys have deep, three-dimensional blind arcades. The ground floor shows blind arcades with round arches, the upper floor shows a segmental arch in the middle , with two triangular 'bishop's hats ' ( arcs en miter ) on the side, which are widespread in the Tolosan area , but usually do not occur in the Saintonge. On the outside, the nave has several buttresses - added later for stabilization - and a rectangular sheathed apse. Church construction has been recognized as a monument historique since 1913 .
  • There are two well-preserved and partially restored windmills in the vicinity of the village ( Moulin de Levreau and Moulin de Renclos ).
