Attractions

Galiot de Genouillac (1465-1546) had the Church of Notre-Dame (also called Sainte-Marie) built from 1520 to bury his first wife Catherine d'Archiac († 1514) there. She brought the barony of Archiac (now the capital of the canton of the same name ) into the marriage. The church, which is unusually large for a small village, is built in the Gothic style , but also shows influences from the Renaissance . The cross-shaped floor plan ends in a five-part choir closure . The church tower is built on the south transept . The spire was destroyed by a lightning strike and is therefore more recent. An ornate frieze runs around the whole building. The church was classified as a Monument historique ('historical monument') in 1907.

Inside the church are the tomb of Catherine d'Archiac, a liter funéraire with the coat of arms of Galiots de Genouillac and an altarpiece with a painting from 1787 depicting the Adoration of the Magi . The reredos, the altar and the tabernacle were classified as Monument historique in 1994. The painting was restored in 1992 and has been classified as a Monument historique since 1908.
