Pérignac is a western French municipality with 1017 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Charente-Maritime in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .
location
Pérignac is at an altitude of about 35 meters above sea level. d. M. and at a distance of about 25 kilometers (driving distance) southeast of Saintes in the cultural landscape of the Saintonge . The canton's capital, Pons , is about ten kilometers to the southwest. Other places with impressive Romanesque churches are just a few kilometers away: Biron , Bougneau , Échebrune , Chadenac , Avy , Marignac u. a.

In the first half of the 19th century the place had well over 2,000 inhabitants, but the number of inhabitants steadily declined afterwards due to the phylloxera crisis and the loss of jobs due to the increasing mechanization of agriculture .
economy
Agriculture (grain and wine) still plays the major role in the economic life of the commune, which is part of the Fins Bois vineyards in the Cognac region. But tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ) has also become an important factor in the municipality's economic life.
history
Small finds from the Neolithic to the Roman period were discovered in the municipality . In addition, the remains of the foundations of a Gallo-Roman country estate ( villa rustica ) were uncovered. As can be deduced from the existence of a Romanesque church, Pérignac was also settled in the Middle Ages.

- The most important attraction of Pérignac is the defensive-looking church of Saint-Pierre, which was recognized as a monument historique as early as 1907 .

- Diagonally in front of the church is a stone cross from the 17th century, which in its structure and overall character is strongly reminiscent of the Hosanna crosses widespread in the region , but in this case - because of the depiction of the crucified - is called Calvaire .
