Église St Eutrope

Sainte-Colombe is a southwestern French community with 109 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Charente-Maritime in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016 Poitou-Charentes ).

Location and climate

Sainte-Colombe is about halfway between Bordeaux (about 63 km to the southwest) and Angoulême (about 62 km northeast) about 500 m northeast of the Seugne river at an altitude of about 85  m . The climate is temperate to warm and is largely influenced by the Atlantic ; Rain (approx. 900 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter half-year.

The steady population decline is due to the loss of jobs as a result of the mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms.

History and economy

The place has existed since the Middle Ages and has always been a self-sufficient farming village, in which wine was also grown and cattle was raised; the church and its baptismal font date from the 12th century.
