Marignac is a western French community with 422 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Charente-Maritime in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .

location

Marignac lies at a height of about 60 meters above sea level. d. M. and at a distance of about 32 kilometers (driving distance) southeast of Saintes in the cultural landscape of the Saintonge . The capital of the canton, Pons , is about ten kilometers northwest. Other places with impressive Romanesque churches are only a few kilometers away: Biron , Bougneau , Échebrune , Chadenac , Avy , Pérignac u. a.

In the 19th century the place had over 600 inhabitants at times, but the number of inhabitants steadily declined afterwards due to the phylloxera crisis and the loss of jobs due to the increasing mechanization of agriculture .

economy

Agriculture (grain and wine) still plays the major role in the economic life of the commune, the soils of which are part of the Fins Bois vineyards in the Cognac region . However, many grapes are also pressed into wine and marketed via the “Charentais” appellation or as an aperitif Pineau des Charentes . Tourism in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ) has also become an important factor in the municipality's economic life.

history

In the Middle Ages, the church and place belonged to a priory of the Charroux Abbey a good 100 kilometers to the northeast . The place and its two Romanesque churches were affected in the course of the Hundred Years War (1337-1453).

  • The most important attraction of Marignac is the Romanesque church Saint-Sulpice with its clover-leaf choir ( trikonchos ), which was recognized as a monument historique as early as 1896 .
  • The former parish church in the Usseau district, which was incorporated in 1825, has a multi-tier archivolt portal ; the window opening in the undecorated gable indicates that the church was previously vaulted. The elongated Gothic choir and the defensive-looking bell tower on the south side are both 15th century renovations. The church building was classified as a monument historique in 2000 .
