Jacques Ricard de Genouillac, called Galiot de Genouillac , (* 1465 in Assier Castle , Quercy ; † October 15, 1546 in Végennes Castle , Limousin ) was a French diplomat and warlord from the family of Ricard de Genouillac. As the Grand Master of the Artillery of France, he participated in the Battle of Marignano . As a skilled diplomat, his travels also took him to see King Henry VIII of England and Emperor Charles V.

Under Charles VIII (France) in 1480 he was employed at the court as a page. In 1491 he became the king's squire . A year later he was Grand Stable Master of the Dauphin , Viguier and royal judge in Figeac . In 1493 he was appointed commander of Najac Castle ; he replaced Guinot Lauzière as Seneschal of Armagnac .

Under Louis XII. In 1498 he became 'captain of the archers' ( Capitaine de francs-archers ) and in 1499 took part in the siege of Alexandria . In 1504 he became the commandant of the castle of Penne-d'Agenais and a horse ranger in the Forêt domaniale de la Grésigne. In 1506 he was involved in the sacking of Tienen and in 1509 in the Battle of Agnadello . After participating in the Battle of Ravenna in 1512, he was promoted to Maître et Capitaine General de l'Artillerie on May 16, succeeding Paul de Benserade, who had fallen at Ravenna.

In 1515 the 60 bronze cannons under his command contributed significantly to the victory at Marignane . The ruler was now Francis I , who promoted him to Seneschal of Quercy in 1517. In 1518 he received the post of royal forest master in Angoumois . In 1520 he organized the meeting at the Field of the Cloth of Gold between Francis I and Henry VIII. He also was 1521 in the campaigns against the armies of Emperor Charles V involved. In the battle of Pavia (1525) he was captured together with Francis I. He negotiated the king's release; also because of this he was promoted to the Grand Equestrian of France on March 2, 1526 and accepted into the Order of Michael . For four years, from 1526 to 1530, he negotiated the release of French citizens from Spanish captivity, including the Dauphin and his brother Heinrich . On August 12, 1541 he was promoted to lieutenant general of the Guyenne . He was injured during the siege of Perpignan in 1542. 1544 led the siege of Luxembourg in which his son François was killed. From 1546 he was then - but only for a short time - Governor of Languedoc .

Possessions

Assier Castle
  • In the Quercy he inherited the Assier Castle. The manor house was demolished in 1524 and replaced by a larger and more comfortable house completed in 1535. In Assier he had a church built with a burial chapel for himself from 1540 and acquired the baronies Capdenac, Livernon, Lunegarde, Reillac, Le Bastit, Fontana, le Bourg, Grèzes, Ginouillac, Lugasso, Fargues, Reilhaguet, Bouyssou and half of Caniac .
  • In the Saintonge (Lonzac) he had the church L'église de la Nativité de la Sainte Vierge built as a burial place for his first wife, Catherine d'Archiac, who died at the age of 29.
  • In the Aunis he bought L'Houmeau, Le Plomb and Laleu .
  • In the Limousin he acquired the castellans Chaylar , Salviac le Treuilh and La Chaulme (which he left to his son)
  • The Duchess of Angoulême gave him Chizé in Poitou
  • In the Bailliages Meaux and Valois: Puiseux and Tournelles
  • In Orléans : Montrichard , La Ferté-Saint-Aubin
  • In the Berry : Magnet, Presle and Vaux
  • In the Auvergne : Queille
  • In Paris , Francis I gave him parts of the Hôtel Saint-Paul and the Hôtel du Petit-Bourbon .
  • He also owned a house in Lyon .

Marriages and offspring

Galiot de Genouillac was married twice. In 1507 he married Catherine d'Archiac (1485-1514), Dame de Lonzac, daughter of Jacques d'Archiac, Baron of Lonzac, and Marguerite de Lévis. This marriage had a daughter:

Three years after the early death of his wife, for whom he had a church of the Holy Sepulcher built in Lonzac , Galiot de Genouillac married Françoise de La Queille, daughter of François de La Queille and Marguerite de Castelnau de Bretenoux, in 1517. With her he had a son:

  • François d'Assier († 1544).

He had three more children from two non-marital relationships. Anne de Saint-Amand bore him a son, Verdun de Genouillac, Lord von Rothiers, who was legitimized in 1540. He had two daughters with a companion of unknown name: Jeanne, who was canon in Cahors, and Colette de Genouillac, who married Louis de Cluzel, lord of La Trayne.
