Najac Castle

The castle Najac ( French Château de Najac ) is the ruins of a medieval hilltop castle in the French commune of Najac in Aveyron , Region Occitan . It is one of the strongest fortifications in the region and has never been conquered.

The complex has been under monument protection as Monument historique since July 1925 .

investment

The castle complex was built in several stages. The oldest part is a rectangular donjon . This then became one of the corner towers of the rectangular core castle with its eight meter high ring walls . The strongest fortification is the round donjon, 11 meters in diameter and 40 meters high, which overlooks the rest of the castle. This tower protrudes from the curtain wall and defends it with flanking fire, which a donjon in the interior of the courtyard cannot do. The gate is protected by a drawbridge and barbican .

Najac Castle is located on the top of an inaccessible hill in a bend in the river, which makes it difficult to attack. A second lower curtain wall lies further down on the hill around the inner castle.
