Saint-Pierre in Fléac-sur-Seugne

The Saint-Pierre church in Fléac-sur-Seugne , south of Pons in the Charente-Maritime department in France , has been a monument historique since March 1904 .

The church dates from the second half of the 15th century and was completed in the early 16th century. The nave is still influenced by the flamboyant style of the French late Gothic , which is particularly evident in the portal , while the winding columns and the octagonal dome and lantern of the bell tower date from the Renaissance period.

The nave has three bays , and on the north side of the first bay is a small side chapel , which today serves as a baptistery . The choir , slightly narrower than the nave, has two bays and ends in a rectangular shape. One -yoke transepts go from the crossing to the north and south. The richly decorated pointed arch portal is framed by two winding pilasters , each with a seated lion ("lion sejant") on each cap . Like some keystones of the vault in the nave, these remind of the coat of arms of the noble Polignac family, who became lords of Fléac and Polignac in the 15th century .

The bell tower, which can be seen from afar, has a square floor plan and rises above the north transept; on its west side, a narrow stair tower with its own, pointed conical roof leads up to the balustrade- reinforced walkway on the tower roof below the tower dome. Access to the spiral staircase is in the transept. The dome stands on the flat roof of the actual tower and has a porthole on each of its eight sides , which open onto the passage on the tower roof. The tall, octagonal lantern rises above the dome.
