The brechtbühne is a modern venue for the Augsburg State Theater . The naming was based on Bertolt Brecht .

The original venue was right next to or behind the main venue of the “ Großes Haus ” theater . It opened in 2012 and closed again in 2018. A new arcade in the Augsburg gas works , which has been declared an interim location, opened in 2019.

2012–2018: venue next to the Great House

The new construction of a second venue for the Augsburg Theater had become necessary because the comedy was finally closed in the summer of 2010 and often had to be moved to more distant venues (especially for rehearsals). The Free State of Bavaria funded the venue with around 1.7 million euros. The official opening took place on April 27, 2012 after only seven months of construction.

The facade of the building, also known as the “container”, was modeled on a red theater curtain . Various drama and ballet productions as well as other cultural events took place in front of around 250 spectators on around 1,600 m² of floor space. The first performance was the comedy Mann ist Mann on May 2, 2012.

According to the original plan, this building was to be used as a stage until 2026, after which it was used as a storage facility for eleven years. In 2015, however, new plans came up: as part of the renovation of the Great House, a new building is to be built at the brechtbühne location, which will accommodate a second venue, workshops, rehearsal stages and an administration. For this reason, the brechtbühne moved to an interim location. The "container" venue was demolished in 2019.

Since 2019: venue in the gas works

After two years of construction, the opening of the new brechtbühne venue in the furnace house of the Augsburg gasworks took place in January 2019 with the premiere of the play "Europe Central" . At the gasworks location there are 219 seats in the auditorium. During the move, the seats and most of the technology were reused. At the request of the SPD , the name brechtbühne continued to be used for this new venue.
