The 1940 World Snooker Championship took place for the eighth and final time at Thurston's Hall in London , England . Because of the Second World War, this was the last world championship until the end of the war. The next world championship was held in 1946.
For the first time, brothers Joe and Fred Davis faced each other in the final. Although the goal of the game of Best of 73 Frames with a score of 37:35 for Joe had already been reached, a "dead frame" was played to the final score of 37:36. Joe Davis played a century break in the decision frame and was also the player with the highest break of 113 points. With that he secured his fourteenth consecutive world championship title.
Despite the outbreak of war in Europe, the Canadian Conrad Stanbury took part again in the tournament. But again he was eliminated in the qualification with 13:18 against the Englishman Herbert Holt . This in turn had to admit defeat to the Scots Walter Donaldson in the quarterfinals .
