Jan Verhaas

Jan Verhaas (born October 5, 1966 in Maassluis ) is a Dutch snooker referee and member of the board of the World Snooker Federation WPBSA .

Life

Before Verhaas began his career as a professional arbitrator, he worked as a process controller at Shell Chemie until the 1980s . After a friend of Verhaas' opened a snooker club in Rotterdam in 1989, Verhaas became enthusiastic about the sport and began training as a referee. A year later he already had the "Class 1 license" from the WPBSA. His first appearance on the Snooker Main Tour followed in 1993. The first game he directed at professional level was a game between Steve Davis and Tony Drago .

He was the first non-British referee to lead a World Cup final in 2003 , in which Ken Doherty and Mark J. Williams faced each other. He was also the referee for five other World Cup finals ( 2006 , 2008 , 2011 , 2013 and 2017 ). He also lost at least one final at other major tournaments such as the UK Championship ( 2005 , 2006 and 2008 ) or the Masters (a total of eight times, most recently in 2010 ).

On December 14, 2016, Verhaas was elected by 14: 4 votes for Alan Chamberlain, who resigned for health reasons, as director of the World Professional Billiards & Snooker Association (WPBSA).
