Magnus Arvedson (born November 25, 1971 in Karlstad ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player and current coach . During his active career he played between 1997 and 2004 for the Ottawa Senators and Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League on the position of the left winger .
Career
Arvedson began his active career at Örebro IK , for whom he played between 1990 and 1993 in Division I, which was then second class. In the summer of 1993 he moved to the club in his hometown, Färjestad BK . There he ran from then on in the Elitserien for the team. After only a few appearances in the first year at Färjestad, he finally made it into the league at the age of 22. He stayed with Färjestad for four years and played in the European Hockey League .
After the Swede was surprisingly selected in the fifth round of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft in 119th place by the Ottawa Senators at the age of 25 , he moved to Canada that same summer . There he ran for the next four years for the Senators in the National Hockey League . His best point yield during the six seasons up to 2003 in the Canadian capital were 47 points in the 1998/99 season . In addition, he was nominated for the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the best defensive striker, to which his plus / minus rating of +33 also contributed. In the election he was narrowly defeated by the Finn Jere Lehtinen . The following two years were marked by injuries that left the striker missing more than 30 games per season. This was followed by two stable years with over 35 scorer points between 2001 and 2003. Arvedson's poor performance in the playoffs meant that the Senators did not extend the expiring contract. So the Swede switched to league rivals Vancouver Canucks as a free agent . After a difficult start he found himself in the middle of the season in a row of attacks with the Swedish twin brothers Henrik and Daniel Sedin . With these Arvedson harmonized well, but he sustained a serious knee injury . This forced him to end the season at the end of January 2004.
With Arvedson's contract expiring and his injury status not being clear, he couldn't find a new employer in the NHL. Therefore, at the beginning of August 2004, he signed a contract with his ex-club in Karlstad. The injury ultimately prevented a continuation of the career. Two months later, on October 11th, he announced his retirement from active sports.
After his active career ended, Arvedson pursued a career as a coach. On March 30, 2007 he was the head coach of the Swedish Elitserien club Mora IK . Mora looked after the Swede only nine months into the 2007/08 season before he was dismissed on December 26th for failure. Arvedson quickly found a new employer in the second division side Bofors IK , who signed him on April 9, 2008. The previous attacker only worked there for seven months. The discharge followed on November 17, 2008.
International
Arvedson represented his home country for the first time at the 1997 World Cup in Finland . He was able to contribute three scorer points in ten tournament games and won the silver medal with the team. Five years later he was also in the Swedish squad for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and played four tournament games.
