Gumbweiler is a part of the local community of St. Julian in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Kusel . Until 1969 the place was an independent municipality. However, it does not have legal status as a local district.

location

The place is located in the North Palatinate Uplands directly on the orographically right bank of the Glan . The settlement area of ​​the core town of St. Julian already extends a few 100 meters to the northeast. The hamlet of Schrammenmühle also belongs to Gumbsweiler .

history

From 1798 to 1814 Gumbsweiler was subordinate to the Mairie Hundheim in the French canton of Lauterecken . In 1928 the place had 571 inhabitants, all of whom were Protestant and lived in 94 residential buildings. Gumbsweiler belonged to the Kusel district office until 1939 , before the place was then added to the newly formed Kusel district. In the course of the Rhineland-Palatinate functional and territorial reform, Gumbsweiler was incorporated into Sankt Julian on June 7, 1969.

Culture

Most of the residents have long-lasting traditions. On the annual Midsummer Day it is customary to take a walk through the town and sing along the way. Eggs and wine are also collected. Other local customs include the so-called "Gehansenacht singing" and playing a mandolin . The latter has been practiced in Gumbsweiler especially since the 1960s. From this the Gumbsweiler Mandolin Orchestra developed , which is now well-known across the region. The Gumbsweiler Singing and Music Association also exists on site .

Infrastructure

The federal highway 420 runs through the village . District road 26, which begins in Gumbsweiler, runs exclusively within the municipality of St. Julian Ort . District road 27 also begins on site and runs to Welchweiler .

In 1904 the town was granted mainly by opening strategic reasons built Glan Valley Railway . The station responsible for the community was located in the neighboring town of St Julian, which for this reason was called St. Julian-Gumbweiler until 1912 . In 1985 passenger traffic was stopped. Since then, Lauterecken-Grumbach station on the Lautertalbahn has been the closest train station.

Gumbsweiler, which used to have four mill wheels, has a flour mill from 1546 that is still in operation today. There is also a village inn that was opened in 1888. With the local Protestant church, Gumbsweiler has a cultural monument . At the beginning of the 20th century, Gumbsweiler still had a post office and a Protestant school.
