It was held from December 1 to 12, 1976 in Melbourne , Australia . The winner was the Australian Eddie Charlton , who defeated the Welshman Ray Reardon with 31:24 in the final. background

Between 1952 and 1957 the World Snooker Championship was held under the name Professional Match-Play championship . In 1976 Eddie Charlton , himself a longtime snooker and English billiards player, hosted a snooker tournament of the same name with the permission of the World Professional Billiards & Snooker Association . Sixteen players took part, including several world class players and several relatively unknown Australian players, but John Spencer , among others, did not take part in the tournament. Ironically, the promoter Charlton himself won the tournament by defeating reigning world champion Ray Reardon .
