The 1988 World Matchplay Championship was a snooker tournament belonging to the 1988/89 snooker season , which was held from December 2nd to 10th, 1988 in Brentwood , England . Reigning world champion Steve Davis won the invitation tournament by beating John Parrott 9-5 . Parrott played the tournament's highest break in the final. The tournament was sponsored by the double glazing company Everest .

After a 12-year hiatus, the tournament was revived by Barry Hearn and his company Matchroom Sport . The top 12 players on the provisional snooker world rankings have been invited. Prize money of ₤ 100,000 was awarded to the winner, the first six-figure bonus for a tournament victory at the time.

12 players were invited to the tournament, eight of them had to qualify for the quarter-finals. The games were played in the best of 17 frames mode. The four winners of the first round competed against the four seeded players. These were Jimmy White , John Parrott , Stephen Hendry and Steve Davis , none of whom lost their games.

Davis and Parrot faced each other in the final at the 1987 Classic , when Davis won 13:11. Davis quickly found his way into his game and led 6-0. Parrott made the break with a 25:73 and shortened to 6: 3, where he played the highest break of the tournament in the ninth frame. Davis won the next frame with 77: 0 and with an 84 break also the next frame to 8: 3, so Davis only needed one frame to win the tournament. Parrott shortened to 8: 5 before Davis won the 14th frame with 73:21 and was the tournament winner.
