The 1989 Scottish Professional Championship was the ninth edition of the Scottish Professional Championship. It was played during the 1988/89 season in February 1989 at Marco's Leisure Center in Edinburgh . For the first time John Rea won ; he defeated last year's finalist Murdo MacLeod 9: 7. Rea played the seventh officially recognized maximum break in the sixth frame of his quarterfinal game on February 18 .

After an initial 0-1 lead by Murdo MacLeod , John Rea took the lead 3-1. MacLeod turned the game around and took the lead 4: 3, but Rea countered again - also thanks to a 74 break - and took the lead 6: 4. After MacLeod had approached 6: 5, Rea increased the lead to 7: 5, but MacLeod managed to equalize. Rea won the next frame and won the following frame by only 10 points to win the competition for the first time.
