The Irish Professional Championship 1989 was a snooker tournament to determine the Northern / Irish master in snooker during the 1988/89 season . It was held in February 1989 in Antrim , Northern Ireland . Two-time world champion Alex Higgins won his sixth title with a 9: 7 against Jack McLaughlin , the highest break was an 84 break from Tommy Murphy .

Jack McLaughlin got off to a better start against the big favorites Alex Higgins and took the lead 3-0. But Higgins was able to equalize only to then take the lead 5-3 and 6-4. McLaughlin managed to equalize 6: 6, but Higgins won the two following frames and only needed one frame to win. McLaughlin got the following frame, but had to admit defeat in the next with 24:71 by a 51 break from Higgins.
