Tournament course
As in previous years, the best 32 players in the world rankings were theoretically placed for the first main round or the round of the last 64. However, in this case with the number six in the world, the Canadian Cliff Thorburn , as in the previous year, a player from this world ranking area did not take part in the tournament, whereby the Australian John Campbell , who was 33rd, moved up into the directly seeded places. In this round, these players each met one of the 32 qualifiers. In the knockout system up to and including the quarter-finals, the game was played in the best of 9 frames mode, followed by the semi-finals in the best of 17 frames mode and the final in the best of 23 frames mode .
final
In the final, the two leading players in the world rankings met with the Englishmen Steve Davis and Jimmy White . Davis, the reigning world champion and defending champion in terms of the International Open, was 102nd in the world rankings with Alain Robidoux , number ten in the world with Dennis Taylor and his competitors from the 1985 World Snooker Championship final, and Wayne Jones , David Taylor and in the semifinals Steve James defeated players from various segments of the world rankings. It was similar for White, who with Martin Clark , Eugene Hughes , Willie Thorne , Barry West and Dean Reynolds, however, had mainly defeated players from the extended world elite.
The beginning of the game was dominated by Davis in particular, who took a 4-0 lead with several high breaks and shortly afterwards increased this to 6-1 with a 121 break. After White came up to 6-2, Davis managed to play a century break in each of the following three frames and thus extend his lead to 9-2. White managed to shorten it to 9: 4 and 10: 6, but Davis could not take his clear lead and ended after eighteen frames with a 71:14 frame win, which he thus with 12: 6 had won.

qualification
As in previous years, all players outside of the first 33 ranks in the world rankings, due to Cliff Thorburn's non-participation, had to qualify in advance for the main round in a maximum of two games in the best of 9 frames mode . In the first, so-called round of the last 128, all players who were not seeded and those who were placed at a maximum of 67th place each met a different player. From each of the 32 games, a winner emerged who met one of the remaining players in the final qualifying round, the round of the last 96. The 32 qualifiers emerged from these 32 games.
Century Breaks
Throughout the tournament, nine players played a total of fifteen Century Breaks - four in qualifying and eleven in the main rounds .
